Water
means life in Southern Central Africa and the Zambezi River draws
life to itself as it wanders from a spring in northern Zambia 2,700
kilometers to the Indian Ocean. Zambia has the most peaceful history
of any nation in the region. Known as “The Real Africa”,
this country remains relatively untouched and undeveloped. Each
place we visit reveals a different aspect of the river’s nature.
At the Falls themselves the river roars as it drops into a great
chasm and here we see its power and majesty. In the Gorge beneath
the falls the river gathers itself for the descent through miles
of the best whitewater rapids in the world. We learn first-hand
that what at first appears to be the chaos of churning whitewater
is actually yet another character of the living waters of the Zambezi
that is both ordered and knowable. Downstream of Victoria Falls
the Kafue River feeds into the Zambezi creating a sanctuary for
all manner of creatures. The character of the river here is one
of peace and tranquility. Here the slow and wide current waters
the garden of the Lower Zambezi Valley and draws to it an unprecedented
abundance of wildlife. Our journey is really several “slices
of life” along the Zambezi River. Each is completely unique
and distinctive from the next. The thread that ties them all together
is the river itself.
